~ OUR FEELINGS ON THIS BLOG ~

We all thought that having a blog for a project is a 'new' and 'fresh' thing. Due to some problems that occurred, we did not really enjoy the joy and excitment that we had expected while doing this blog because of time constrain.
At first, we were very surprised that our class is the only class who don't know about the blog. Perhaps due to whatever reasons, we only realized it when the teacher-in-charge came to our class to inform us. We were all stunned when we found out about it. The teacher said that he would check it out for us and we thought that we would be followed up and thus, did nothing too. But later then we realized that we had to finish it before the end of this week. So we started creating our blog with only two days left......
We had actually done our blog on the day of the dateline but we were not aware that we had to send the URL to the teacher-in-charge until the following day.Realising it, we were really scared and confused about what to do. We really regret doing nothing when we were first informed of doing a blog. To amend our mistake, we tried our best to do what we can do on the blog and to make it as nice as possible.
We are very sorry for the late submission of the blog and hope that our efforts that we put in creating this blog can amend our mistakes. We had done our best in creating this blog and had really learnt our lesson. Though we might had been rushing our work, we have learnt something from making this blog and we still think that having a blog for projects is quite an interesting idea.

EFFECTS ON SMOKING...!!!

*WARNING
The following pictures may be disgusting, if you just had your meal, you are not advised to see the following pictures!!

TIPS FOR QUITTING...

* Quitting smoking can be a difficult but very rewarding decision for you and your friends or family. To help you begin living your life smoke-free, review the following tips for success.

* Think about your reasons for quitting. Write them down and carry them with you. You can read them every day or when the going gets tough.

* Choose a good time to quit and set a quit date. Stick with it. Sign a contract. Announce it to family and friends who support your decision.

* Have a plan before you quit. Exercise or take a walk instead. When you're bored, plan to call a friend, listen to music, go for a walk, and play with your pet, JUST GET BUSY! When you're upset, angry, or worried, call a friend, write it down, or talk to someone you trust.

* Think good thoughts. "I will do this." "I'm worth it." "I'm in control." "I'm proud of myself."

REAL LIFE EXAMPLES***

Lorraine Hansberry, 34, playright(Raisin in the Sun) lung cancer

Carolina Knapp, 42, author (Pack of Two/The Hunger) * lung cancer

Nat "King" Cole, 45, singer * lung cancer

Graham Chapman, 48 comic ("Monty Python") * throat cancer

Roger Maris, 51, baseball player (N.Y. Yankees) * lung cancer

Wayne McLaren, 51, "Marlboro Cowboy" * lung cancer

Rod Serling, 51, director & heavy smoker * heart disease

Larry Gilbert, 55, PGA golfer * lung cancer

Ian Fleming, 56, James Bond creator * heart attack

WHY QUIT SMOKING...???

1. Improve my personal appearance by eliminating such things as stained teeth and fingers, bad breath, coughing, and smoking odor on clothes. Prevent wrinkles and keep my skin nice. (Every puff on a cigarette puts 4,000 different chemicals into your body, but once you've stopped your skin should start to look brighter and younger than if you had continued to smoke. That’s because the levels of oxygen in your body will return to normal and your circulation will improve. You'll slow the formation of wrinkles around your mouth and eyes, and your eyes themselves will probably look brighter. The staining on your teeth and fingers will stop and your breath, hair, clothes and home will all smell better.)

2. Regain my sense of taste and smell, feel more energized and active, sleep better, and eliminate 'hairy tongue' and 'smokers cough' or wheezing.

3. Regain control of my behavior, gaining a sense of freedom, and owning myself again.

4. Reduce health risks, such as the risk of heart disease, cancer, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. I do not want a heart attack or to have problems breathing.

5. Reduce risk to unborn children and provide a healthy environment for children and others living with me.

6. Save money.

7. Once you’ve had your last cigarette…
You’ll be amazed how quickly you see the difference:
-After 20 minutes, your blood pressure and pulse should return to normal. Circulation improves, especially to hands and feet.
-After 8 hours, blood oxygen levels increase to normal and your chances of having a heart attack start to fall.
-After 24 hours, carbon monoxide leaves the body. The lungs start to clear out mucus and debris.
-After 48 hours, your body is now nicotine-free. Your senses of taste and smell begin to improve.
-After 3 days, breathing is easier and your energy levels increase.
-2-12 weeks, circulation improves throughout the body. Walking and exercise get easier.
-3-9 months, breathing problems, coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing improve. Lung efficiency will have increased by 5-10%.
-After 5 years, risk of having a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker.
-After 10 years, risk of lung cancer falls to around half that of a smoker. Risk of a heart attack falls to about the same as someone who has never smoked.
-Increase productivity by regaining the time I now spend maintaining my smoking habit.
-Avoid possible injury or upset to others by such things as smoking in restaurants or dropping ashes on them.

A friend who smokes heavily helped us!!

One of our main factors on our Learning Issues column was “why quit smoking?”. At first, this question was a complete stranger to us until we came across a friend who was smoking heavily had broken up with his loved one, because of his smoking habits. His girlfriend of 2 years had gotten frustrated with him smoking the whole day and worst of all, his girlfriend was a doctor. This immediately attracted our attention and thus, we decided to find out more about this topic. From books and that friend we found out that quitting smoking improves our looks and helps us save money. It also help reduce health risks. These were the few points that we stated in our FILA chart. That’s all for now, and remember, DON'T SMOKE!!

WHAT DID WE FACE???

As our group have 5 members, we had to do 5 different posters. To finish it fast, we separated the workload between ourselves and we had to do 1 poster each. When we gathered, we found out that we faced the same problem co-incidentally---we do not know how to make a poster! So, we discussed on how to do a poster as we took reference from other posters. We also discussed about who is better in which topic and separated the different topics among ourselves. Though we did 'double' the job of others, we also got 'double' the reward of others. We got to bond our relationship between ourselves as the number of times we meet and the most importantly, we learnt how to make a poster. On top of that, we also learnt more about the consequences of smoking as we came by with the information. Though, we might have wasted a bit of the time, we still managed to catch up and we think that it is worth it! ^^

Our favourite sentence...

[“Rome was not built in a day.” This sentence is so true.]
We liked this part of the report as like we mentioned, it is so true and we encounter it every time we handle a project. We believe you who is reading our post believe this too. Why we liked this part a lot is also because we applied what we have learnt in our English class. This was a proverb taught by Ms Teo our English teacher. We remembered that moment when Ms Teo mentioned this proverb, we had the urge to use it already. To us, it is a simple yet meaningful proverb that we will remember forever.

A modern day invention---COMPUTER

The COMPUTER is the best helper to us as we do most of our work on the it. All our surveys, conclusions, pictures and information (from the internet) were done on computers. With the computer, we had saved lots of time and effort in perfecting our work. On computers, we can simply log on to the internet and search for the information and pictures required for our project work. With that, we can focus more on our surveys. The computer had really helped us and we really can't imagine what we'd do without it.

WORKING WITH A LIBRARIAN...

On this particular day, our project work teammates went to the Hougang National Library to look for some information for our project. We were looking for books that are relevant to SMOKING, but all our efforts were in vain. Having a hard time searching for them, we sought help from the librarian. They were very amiable and helpful. They tried their best to help us look for all the books about smoking and without much effort, we found all the books that we needed. We thanked them profusely and were very grateful for their help. Without their help, we may be still be in the library searching for books. It was like finding a needle in a haystack, but of course with the help of the librarians, it was much faster and easier.

WHERE WE GOT OUR RESOURCES (INFORMATION) ???

We got our resources through:

* INTERNET (naver, daum, yahoo, google )
* BOOKS
* SURVEYS
* "TALKS" FROM EXPERIENCED PEOPLE

PROJECT WORK CONCLUSION [final]

Most surveyors feel that by quitting smoking, their family relationships will improve. They also think that by quitting their smoking habit, they could help save money. We also found out that families think smoking means that someone is rebellious. Families who have smokers rarely go out together. They often quarrel too. Last but not least, families with smokers often lack communication.

From our surveys, our group members have learnt a lot. We want to warn teenagers to quite smoking as it is useless to cry over spilt milk when he learns that his family disowns him because of his healthy smoking habits or when he learns that he has contracted lung cancer. In conclusion...

STOP SMOKING!

PROJECT WORK CONCLUSION [part III]

Our second survey was conducted as we wanted to find out more about a smoker’s relationship between his money and family. We had to get accurate results and therefore, our group members went in to hunt for real teenage smokers. Fortunately, we managed to find enough people to complete our surveys.

We collated the surveys ant the results was satisfying. We managed to find out which cigarette’s brand teenagers usually purchase (e.g. Next and Marlboro). The prices ranged from $9.40 to $11.60, based on our survey results.

Normally, teenagers will use allowance given by parents to satisfy their smoking needs while others went out to work and use their salary to buy cigarettes. Some even borrow money from friends.

Based on survey’s result, our group feels that families should communicate with each other more often to understand each other more as teenagers who did our surveys state that smoking does not affect their family’s’ relationship because they are not close. How could they write these answers! Moreover, they have blood relationship. Basically, our group members were practically stunned by their answers. On the other hand, we still had good answers. Some smokers wrote that smoking affects family relationship as their family thinks that it is unhealthy while another’s family thinks that the smoke produced is smelly.

PROJECT WORK CONCLUSION [part II]

Many teenagers have received “no smoking” education in school but we felt that it was not enough. Thus, we asked surveyors for suggestions on how to improve schools’ way of “no smoking” education. One felt that we should have schools inviting real smoke addicts and let them tell their stories, their regrets and the problems they encountered. That was a very fresh suggestion and we found it worth trying.

Our group wanted to know what could be done to prevent teenagers from smoking too. As usual, we asked for suggestions from surveyors. We received splendid response. They felt that family support, making teenagers aware of consequences, playing the computer games and banning cigarettes would be a helping hand.

We also found out that teens felt that sports could help them refrain from their temptations to smoke. Besides that, surveyors felt that activities like shopping, listening to music and reading would help too. Having a healthy lifestyle helps in another way to prevent smoking. Smokers should exercise more, eat healthily and do more sports. As the saying goes “Rome was not built in a day”, the road to deter teenagers from smoking may takes a long time.

PROJECT WORK CONCLUSION [part I]

Teenagers have the “In” thing going within them and that’s smoking! Our group knows that smoking is harmful to our health but do teenagers know? To find out the answer, we carried out surveys.

For the first survey, 30 teenagers were selected and they were to provide us with the answers we needed. With these answers, we also developed a deeper understanding of smoking in teenagers’ mind. From surveys results, we found out that family support is important to smoking addicts.

“Teenagers know the consequences of smoking but still smoke?” That was the puzzling thing that hit our group and has further motivated us to deter teens from smoking. Besides that, we also found out that teenagers are under peer pressure and that the factor that caused them to smoke. In addition, teenagers smoke because of family problems and stress from studies. With this information, we suggest that teachers and families should show more concern to their children and not push them too much. As we often say “haste makes waste”.

Non-smokers who did our first survey feel that teenagers smoke mainly because of peer pressure and curiosity. “Birds of a feather flock together”. Parents should make sure their child mix with the right group of friends. As we often say, “spare the rod and spoil the child”.

Surveyors also think that if they were smokers, curiosity will be the main reason that will lead them to smoking. Stress and being influenced are the other two factors.

Most surveyors also feel that their health might be at risk if they pick up smoking. They are right! Do not smoke or risk having bad health. Other surveyors feel that they will encounter family, money, and relationship problems.

ENGLISH REPORT

“Rome was not built in a day.” This sentence is really so true. Our team members Jiayun, Lijun, Pearlyn, Yvonne and Huiwen, have worked diligently for days, weeks and months to accomplish Year 2007 Sec1 major project of the year. The objective of this project is to help the Youth council to stop teenagers from abusing DAT. DAT is the short form of Drugs, Alcohol and last but not least, Tobacco.

Our teacher in charge Mrs. Ganesan told us to choose a topic among the three given choices. After a voting session and a short discussion, we agreed on the topic “Smoking”. We attended design and technology lessons to learn skills needed to build display units for the project. Each lesson lasted for 1.5 hours. We also did research on the internet to find out more about cigarettes and the consequences of smoking. In addition, we also did 2 mini surveys on teenagers to help us achieve better results for the assignment. Brochures related to this project were also our “helping hand”.

It may look like a simple and easy project to outsiders but to those who are involved, for example; our team, it was not a comfortable job after all. A lot of effort and time was taken out to accomplish the “mission”. We had to rack our brains hard to find the related information. Besides, the internet sometimes has too much information, which made it even tougher for us to find sensible answers to our question marks. Besides that, we had to find “real” smokers to complete our surveys. However, our hard work paid off with the strong perseverance and team spirit our team possesses.

Before we started on the project, the 5 of us had a mini discussion on how to complete the assignment. We split up the work and came up with various date lines. Each of us had an important duty and had to finish the solo “mission” by that day. Fortunately, the outcome was satisfying. We managed to complete the surveys, find essential information to deter teenagers from smoking. Besides that, we picked up many different varieties of skills from the design and technology class which we had been attending since the mega June holidays.

“Everything we do, we learn.” As mentioned in this sentence, our team had been gaining a lot from this huge project we had been focusing on since June. We learn to “stand up every time we fall”, put ourselves into other people’s shoes and believe in others. Between our friends and ourselves, we have to trust one another, believe in them, and give them our support. Everyone makes mistakes. It happens to every single person in their journey of life. We just have to face the mistakes and deal with them. Furthermore, we learn to understand our teammates’ difficulties and to help them in any way we can. Last but not least, our team learned the many dangers of smoking and knows that we have a responsibility to caution smokers living around us:
Smoking
kills!
